How it works

Maximize compete level through a sustained multi-puck board battle that rewards sustained effort and physical and mental compete throughout.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

Elite compete level isn't a single burst , it's sustained intensity through fatigue, adversity, and repeated losing situations. A last-man-standing format forces players to maintain compete focus across multiple consecutive battles rather than a single rep. The physical and mental demand of this drill directly mirrors a playoff game's sustained physical intensity.

1

All players line up along the boards; 3 pucks are placed in the corner.

2

Coach blows whistle, everyone battles for all three pucks simultaneously.

3

Player with a puck after 10 seconds keeps competing; players without a puck must immediately enter the next battle when a new puck is released by coach.

4

Coach releases new pucks every 15 seconds for 3 minutes; most pucks controlled over the period wins the drill.

Goal

You're doing it right when you keep fighting for every loose puck even after you've been knocked down or outworked on the last one.

Helpful cues

  • Compete level doesn't drop because you're tired, that's exactly when it has to go up
  • Never watch a loose puck, attack it
  • A champion competes on the 10th battle the same way as the first

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Limit to 4 players and 2 pucks to reduce chaos and focus on individual compete decisions

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a conditioning element, players must complete a half-ice sprint before re-entering each battle
