How it works

Build power play teamwork by executing a structured puck movement sequence requiring every player to touch the puck before a shot.

What you need

  • hockey stick
  • puck
  • ice

Your focus

Power play success depends on the entire unit working as one connected system , every player communicating, moving to the right spots, and making the next player's job easier. A 'touch-it-all' sequence forces players to prioritize team play over individual action. This teamwork habit translates into a power play that is harder for penalty killers to read and shut down.

1

Set up a power play unit (5-on-4) in the offensive zone.

2

Coach calls 'teamwork rep', the power play unit must make the puck touch all 5 players' sticks before a shot is taken.

3

Penalty kill team actively defends; the power play cannot shoot until all 5 have touched it.

4

Debrief on positioning, spacing, and communication that made the sequence possible.

Goal

Success is every player touching the puck before a shot gets off, no one is standing still and no one is skipped.

Helpful cues

  • Move the puck to move the defender, not just for the sake of it
  • Be available on every touch, not just when you think you'll score
  • Call out when you've touched it so the next option knows to move

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Run against a passive penalty kill that simply positions without pressure

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Set a 10-second shot clock after the 5th touch, the power play must shoot immediately or restart
