How it works
Execute a fluid 3-forward breakout with continuous verbal support calls and a coordinated shot or scoring chance at the end.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
Your focus
A 3-on-0 breakout is the purest test of team structure and communication , with no defender, poor teamwork and communication are exposed immediately. Players learn to fill lanes, call for pucks, and make decisions as a cohesive unit rather than independently. These patterns become automatic under defensive pressure when practiced first without defenders.
Three forwards line up at the goal line: LW, C, RW.
Coach passes to one player; the ball carrier calls the breakout option ('up' or 'wheel').
All three players move their lane through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone.
Sequence ends with a shot on net; rotate which player initiates each time.
Helpful cues
- Lane discipline, stay in your third of the ice
- Call for the puck early so your teammates know you're open
- Finish every breakout with a shot, don't stop before the net
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Walk through the lanes at half speed without pucks before adding skating at full speedUpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a trailing defender who pursues from the neutral zone, forcing quicker passing decisions and communicationNo account needed
