How it works
Develop communication and teamwork through a give-and-go passing sequence that requires verbal and positional coordination.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- ice
Your focus
The give-and-go is hockey's most fundamental teamwork sequence , it requires trust, timing, and communication to execute correctly. Players learn that the pass is only part of the play; the return support and communication of position complete it. Practicing this builds the instinct to support the puck carrier immediately after passing.
Player A starts at the blue line with the puck; Player B positions near the boards at the top of the circles.
A passes to B and calls 'go!', immediately skating forward for the return pass.
B receives and passes back to A now in stride.
A shoots on net to complete the sequence; rotate roles.
Goal
You're there when the give-and-go happens smoothly, the pass goes right before contact, the give is clean, and the return hits you in stride.
Helpful cues
- Call 'go' before you pass, not after
- B's job is to be in position before the pass arrives
- The return pass is the play, set it up perfectly
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Run stationary, A passes, B returns, A receives, before adding skating and timingUpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a defender between A and B who tries to intercept the return pass, requiring better communication and timingNo account needed
