How it works
Develop the ability to combine high-speed slalom skating with explosive stops and immediate re-acceleration.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- cones
- ice
Your focus
Elite play demands rapid deceleration and re-acceleration without losing body position or puck control. Training this pattern at game speed develops both anaerobic conditioning and edge control. Players who master this drill can shake defenders in tight spaces and accelerate into open ice instantly.
Set up 6 cones in a slalom pattern, each 8 feet apart, from one blue line to the other.
Player starts with a puck, drives full speed through the slalom.
At the final cone, player executes a full hockey stop, then immediately accelerates back through the slalom in the opposite direction.
Complete 3 full round-trips with a 45-second rest between rounds.
Goal
You're doing it right when you can weave through at full speed, brake hard enough to send snow, and immediately burst out again without losing even a step.
Helpful cues
- Attack each gate, don't drift wide
- Snap your stop with both edges simultaneously
- Your first stride out of the stop should be your hardest

Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
