How it works
Develop the ability to execute sharp 90-degree turns at each corner of a small square while maintaining puck control.

- cones
- ice
Your focus
Square-pattern skating teaches players to decelerate, redirect, and accelerate , the three components of every in-game direction change. Pairing this with puck control simulates game conditions where the puck carrier must evade defenders. Consistent repetition builds the muscle memory to make these moves instinctively.
Set up 4 cones in a 10x10-foot square on the ice.
Player starts at one cone with a puck and skates to the next cone, making a sharp 90-degree cut.
Player continues around all four corners, maintaining puck control throughout.
Coach times each run; players aim to reduce their time while keeping the puck.
Goal
You're there when you hit all four corners cleanly and the puck never rolls off your blade through the whole square.
Helpful cues
- Drop your hip into the turn
- Keep the puck on your forehand through cuts
- Drive hard out of every corner
