How it works
Train reactive agility by requiring players to change direction in response to a coach's live color or signal cues.
What you need
- hockey stick
- puck
- cones
- colored pinnies or flags
- ice
Your focus
Predictive agility drills improve only planned movements; reactive agility drills improve the cognitive-physical link that drives real game decisions. Forcing players to read a signal while managing the puck develops the split-second processing speed that separates elite players. This drill directly mirrors breakout reads and defensive gap situations.
Set up 4 gates (pairs of cones 4 feet wide) arranged in a cross pattern on the ice.
Coach stands at center holding colored flags or calling directional signals (left, right, back, go).
Player skates at moderate speed with a puck near center; on coach's signal, drives immediately through the designated gate.
Player returns to center after each gate, and coach calls the next direction, run for 20-second bursts with 40-second rests, 4 rounds.
Goal
You've got it when you're already moving before you've finished thinking, your body reacts to the signal before you consciously process it.
Helpful cues
- Scan the coach, don't look at your feet
- Your hips must follow the signal, not lead it
- Stay in an athletic ready position between signals
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Use only two gates (left and right) and give the signal before the player starts movingUpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a puck retrieval, player must pick up a loose puck after each gate before returning to centerNo account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
