How it works
Develop the QB habit of reading the coverage type and selecting the appropriate throw target based on the defensive alignment.

Your focus
Throw selection in flag football is never independent of coverage recognition. QBs who throw to the right receiver for the wrong reason get lucky; QBs who make correct reads build reliable decision-making habits. Connecting the throw mechanics to a preceding coverage decision teaches the cause-and-effect relationship of QB execution.
Defense sets up in player-to-player or zone coverage; QB must identify and call the coverage type before taking the snap.
QB selects the most advantageous receiver based on the coverage type and delivers a timing throw to that target.
Coach grades both the coverage identification accuracy and the appropriateness of the target selection, separately from throw accuracy.
Run 10 reps; target selection grade is weighted equally with throw execution grade.
Goal
You're there when your coverage read matches your throw selection, player-to-player coverage gets one route concept, zone gets another.
Helpful cues
- Read the coverage, then throw to beat that coverage
- player-to-player coverage: throw to your best route runner with the hardest break
- Zone: find the gap and throw to the receiver settling in it
