How it works
Apply first-step speed and acceleration to create measurable separation from a live defender on a speed route (go route or deep post).

Your focus
Speed routes in flag football are the most direct application of raw speed and acceleration. Receivers who can beat defenders deep with speed create the vertical threat that opens all other routes in the offense. Training speed routes with a live defender teaches players how to use their acceleration at the right moment to create maximum separation.
Receiver and defender line up at the same cone; receiver runs a go route at full speed.
Defender releases at the same time and attempts to stay within 2 yards.
QB throws deep at the 15-yard mark; receiver must catch with at least 1 yard of separation.
Run 6 reps; receiver wins if separation is achieved at the catch point.
Goal
Success is beating the live defender by a full step on the speed route, separation created by your first step, not your top speed.
Helpful cues
- Win the first 5 yards and the rest is gravy
- Stay low for 3 steps to maximize acceleration efficiency
- Do not look back too early: run your speed before you look for the ball
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Give the receiver a 1-yard head start to build confidence in winning the speed matchup.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Defender gets a 1-yard head start, requiring superior acceleration technique to close the gap.No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
