How it works
Develop defensive closing speed to accelerate from coverage position and arrive at the ball carrier in time for a successful flag pull.

Your focus
Closing speed is the defensive equivalent of separation speed, and it determines whether a defender can overcome a receiver catching a short pass and convert to a flag pull. Defenders who can close the last 3 to 5 yards explosively pull flags that slower defenders cannot reach. Training closing speed as a specific skill dramatically improves flag pull success rates in flag football.
Defender lines up 4 yards from a receiver who is catching a short pass; the catch is the trigger for the closing acceleration.
At the moment of catch, defender accelerates at maximum speed to close and pull at least one flag.
Carrier takes two juke steps after the catch; defender must close despite the evasion.
Run 8 reps; track flag pull success rate and time from catch trigger to flag pull.
Goal
You've got it when you close on the ball carrier fast enough to pull their flag before they reach the line, closing speed, not just chasing.
Helpful cues
- Your acceleration starts the moment you see the catch, not after
- Drive your knees and arms as you close: closing speed is explosive, not gradual
- Close to the near hip where the flag is: do not close to the center of the body
