How it works
Develop explosive first-step acceleration off the line of scrimmage to create immediate separation from the defender at the snap.

Your focus
The first step off the line in flag football is the highest-leverage speed moment in a route. Receivers who accelerate faster than their defender in the first two steps are already in a winning position before the route break. Building first-step quickness through repeated explosion reps creates the acceleration habit that defines receiving at this age group.
Receiver starts in a 3-point stance or staggered stance at the line of scrimmage with a cone 5 yards downfield.
On a go signal, receiver explodes with maximum effort for 5 yards, driving knees high and pumping arms.
A parent or partner times each rep with a stopwatch; focus is on the first 2 yards of acceleration.
Run 6 reps; rest 30 seconds between each. Compare first-rep and last-rep split times.
Goal
You're there when your first two steps off the line are noticeably faster than a jog start, real acceleration, not just running.
Helpful cues
- Low start, high drive: lean slightly forward and push the ground behind you
- First two steps are the whole race at the line
- Drive your elbows back as your knees come up
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Use a rolling start (player already in motion) to remove the static start demand.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a defender who also fires off the line, creating a live speed race for the first 5 yards. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
