How it works

Test and build resilience by requiring a team to complete a scoring drive after a scripted series of three consecutive personal errors within the drive.

What you need

  • cones

Your focus

Resilience under a stack of personal errors is harder than resilience after a single mistake. This drill ensures players have practiced recovering from accumulated adversity rather than just isolated setbacks. Teams with multi-error resilience are the most dangerous opponents to face in elimination tournaments.

1

A selected player is scripted to have three consecutive errors (drop, wrong route, missed block assignment) within a single drive.

2

After each error, the player applies the resilience protocol: Name it, breathe, Next play.

3

The team must score on the drive despite the scripted errors requiring adjustments around the struggling player.

4

Debrief: how did the player demonstrating resilience affect the rest of the team?

Helpful cues

  • Three errors in one drive is nothing if you bounce back on the fourth play
  • The team rallies when they see their teammate resilient
  • Resilience after a string of mistakes is the hardest and most impressive kind

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Reduce to two scripted errors and allow a brief group check-in between each one.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

The scripted errors include a turnover on one of the three; the team must also recover from losing possession.
