Receiving & Route Running

How it works

Perfect all nine routes in the route tree against live defenders, grading each route on the separation created at the break point.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

Advanced receivers must be able to run every route in the tree against any coverage, not just their best route against favorable looks. Grading separation at the break point rather than catch outcome focuses players on the process that creates the catching opportunity. A receiver who can create separation on all nine routes is nearly impossible to cover in flag football.

1

Call routes randomly from the full tree; receiver runs each route against a live live defender.

2

Coach grades separation at the break point: 3 points (clear separation), 2 points (contested), 1 point (no separation).

3

After the full tree, receiver identifies their two lowest-separation routes and repeats them three times each.

4

Final rep: run the two lowest routes again and compare grade to the baseline.

Goal

You've got it when your route tree separation earns a catchable target on most routes, the QB trusts the window you're creating.

Helpful cues

  • Every route has a specific footwork key: know it for each of the nine
  • Separation is earned in the last two steps before the break
  • Study the defender during the stem to set up the break

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow 2 attempts at each route before moving on; take the higher grade.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defender knows which route is coming and must be beaten anyway, requiring exceptional technique to create separation.
