How it works

Develop the ability to run a precise route against player-to-player coverage and catch the ball cleanly in a contested situation.

What you need

  • football
  • flags

Your focus

Route running against a live defender tests whether the technique holds up under real pressure. Receivers who can create even one step of separation through precise footwork catch more contested balls than those who rely on physical advantages. Learning to high-point and secure the ball through defensive pressure is the next level of receiving skill.

1

Pair a receiver with a live defender; QB throws a 10-yard route with the defender in trail coverage.

2

Receiver runs the route at full speed; the break is the moment where the defender can be beaten by footwork quality.

3

QB throws to the break; receiver works to secure the catch while the defender reaches for the flag.

4

Grade three elements: route precision (break quality), catch security (hands), and flag protection (tuck after catch).

Goal

Success is creating a half-step of separation on your route break against live coverage, enough to get the ball.

Helpful cues

  • One clean step beats a defender, not three sloppy ones
  • High-point the ball away from the defender reach
  • Catch it before you worry about the flag

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Defender lines up 2 yards off the receiver giving more separation space.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defender presses at the line before playing trail coverage, requiring the receiver to work through an initial bump.
