How it works

Teach players to identify whether the defense is in zone or player-to-player coverage by observing defender alignment and eye direction before the snap.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

Recognizing player-to-player vs. zone coverage is the foundational play recognition skill for both QB and receivers in flag football. Players who can identify coverage pre-snap reduce their cognitive load during the play itself. Consistent coverage identification is the building block of all advanced flag football play recognition.

1

Defense sets up in either player-to-player or pure zone; offense has 5 seconds to identify the coverage before the snap.

2

The QB calls out the coverage type; coach confirms with a thumbs up or thumbs down before the play is run.

3

Run the called play appropriate to the coverage; grade both identification accuracy and play selection suitability.

4

Run 12 reps varying the coverage; track identification accuracy rate.

Goal

You're there when you correctly sort zone from player-to-player coverage by watching where the defenders go at the snap, not before it.

Helpful cues

  • Player-to-player: defenders are attached to your players
  • Zone: defenders are looking at the QB, not at a receiver
  • Read the eyes and hips of the deepest defenders first

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach signals the coverage type to the QB before each rep using a hand signal.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defense disguises zone as player-to-player pre-snap and rotates at the snap.
