How it works
Recognize offensive formation types and call out the correct coverage before the snap.
What you need
- cones
Your focus
Identifying formation before the snap gives the defense a head start on coverage assignments. This drill builds the pre-snap reading habit that separates reactive defenders from anticipatory ones.
Parent places cones in different offensive formations.
Player walks to the line, identifies the formation, and calls: "Trips right", "Spread", or "Pro set".
Parent confirms or corrects.
10 formations total, use at least 3 different ones.
Final 3 reps: player must call AND immediately drop to correct coverage zone.
Goal
You've got it when you correctly identify all 10 formations with no errors.
Helpful cues
- Check receivers first, count and cluster them
- Look at the strength of the formation (more receivers = strong side)
- Communicate out loud, if you can't say it, you don't know it
