How it works

Build the habit of complete mental focus during the pre-snap window by requiring players to identify one key defensive detail before every snap.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

The pre-snap window is the highest-value focus opportunity in flag football; players who use it well make better decisions on every play. Building the habit of identifying one specific defensive detail before the snap makes reading coverage automatic over time. Consistent pre-snap focus is the difference between reactive and proactive flag football players.

1

Before each snap, QB pauses and each player on offense identifies one thing they observe in the defending group (coverage depth, blitz alignment, receiver-defender matchup).

2

QB asks two random players for their pre-snap observation before calling the snap cadence.

3

Run the play; after it, check whether the identified defensive detail was accurate and relevant to the outcome.

4

Run 10 plays with the pre-snap focus protocol; track how often observations were accurate.

Helpful cues

  • One thing, every snap, before you move
  • What do you see right now? Name it
  • Your focus before the snap determines your success after it

Make it easier

Strip it back

Coach provides a list of 3 specific things to look for and players just identify which of the 3 they see.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Observation must be team-relevant: the player must explain how their observation should change what the offense does.
