How it works
Ignite competitive drive in young players by racing a teammate to a loose flag on the ground.
What you need
- flags
- cones
Your focus
A simple race creates natural competitive drive without complex instruction. The desire to win motivates maximum effort in a safe and age-appropriate context. Early competitive wins build the drive to compete harder in more complex flag football situations.
Two players start side by side 10 yards from a flag lying on the ground.
Coach says Set, Go, and both players sprint to the flag; first to grab it wins the rep.
Winner holds up the flag and celebrates; both players reset and compete again.
Run 8 races per pair; mix up pairings so every player competes against different teammates.
Goal
You've got it when you race for that flag on the ground like the game depends on it, full sprint every time.
Helpful cues
- Want it more than they do
- Sprint from the start, do not ease into it
- Win the race then give them a high five
