Your focus
Zone defense in flag football requires defenders to own a geographic area while communicating with adjacent defenders about threat locations. Players who understand zone coverage can be in the right place without being physically superior athletes. Communication habits built in zone drills translate directly to fewer open receivers in game coverage.
Set up a 3-deep zone with three defenders each owning one third of the field width and one third of the depth.
Offense runs a 4-receiver set; QB has 4 seconds to throw against the zone.
Defenders must call out receiver locations verbally ('Receiver entering my right seam!') and help adjacent zones when threatened.
Grade each rep on zone integrity (no uncovered receivers) and communication quality.
Goal
Success is every defender in the correct zone before the ball is thrown, coverage set before the QB releases it.
Helpful cues
- You own your zone, make them work to catch in it
- Call out everything you see, your teammate needs the information
- Don't chase, redirect to your zone boundary
