How it works

Train defensive players to track the QB's eyes post-snap to anticipate the throw direction before the ball is released.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

Elite flag football defenders can read the QB's eye movement to anticipate throws and close faster on the ball. QBs who stare down their receivers telegraph throws that defenders can jump. Teaching eye tracking as a specific defensive skill dramatically improves interception opportunities and flag pulls on contested catches.

1

QB takes snaps and looks to various receivers; defenders align in coverage and focus primarily on the QB's eyes and shoulders.

2

At the moment the QB commits their eyes to a receiver, the covering defender on that side accelerates to close.

3

If the defender closes within 1 yard of the receiver at the catch point, it counts as a coverage win.

4

Run 10 reps; QB uses pump fakes on 30% to also practice defenders not breaking on fakes.

Goal

You've got it when you break to the right receiver because you tracked the QB's eyes, not because you guessed.

Helpful cues

  • Watch the QB's chest and eyes, not the receiver
  • When their eyes lock, you move
  • Don't bite on the pump fake, wait for the hips to commit

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

QB does not pump fake in early reps to build basic eye tracking habits.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

QB uses multiple pump fakes and look-offs before delivering, defenders must read through the deception.
