How it works
Teach young players the basic arm extension and reach needed to pull a flag from a moving ball carrier.
What you need
- flags
- cones
Your focus
Freeze tag mimics the flag-pull action in a fun, low-pressure environment that builds muscle memory. Young players learn to track a moving target and extend their arm at the right moment. Repetition in game-like movement patterns accelerates skill development without the pressure of live plays.
Set up a 15x15 yard square with cones; give every player a flag belt with two flags.
Choose 2-3 players to be 'it', their job is to pull flags from all other players.
When a player's flag is pulled, they freeze in place until a teammate re-attaches their flag.
Rotate who is 'it' every 90 seconds so all players practice the pulling motion repeatedly.
Goal
You've got it when you pull the flag cleanly with your hands, not just swatting at it or grabbing the belt.
Helpful cues
- Reach for the flag, not the body
- Keep your eyes on the carrier's hips, not their feet
- Two hands ready as you close in
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Reduce the square to 10x10 yards so defenders close distance faster.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a second flag belt so carriers have four flags, requiring more precise and deliberate pulls. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
