How it works

Develop elite attitude resilience by performing under a stack of deliberately introduced adversities during live play.

What you need

  • football
  • flags
  • cones

Your focus

Elite athletes are defined by their attitude when multiple things go wrong simultaneously. Stacking adversities (penalty, turnover, and clock pressure in the same drive) trains players to separate their attitude from external results. Teams that maintain their identity and positivity through stacked adversity are the most competitive in close games.

1

Run a live small-sided activity flag football game with coaches introducing planned adversity at random intervals: false start penalty, a ruled-incomplete catch reversal, and a 30-second clock runoff.

2

The offensive captain must respond to each adversity with a prescribed reset call ('We've got this, one play') and players must physically gather before the next snap.

3

Coaches grade attitude on a 1-5 scale after each adversity event; debrief between series.

4

The team's goal is to finish the drive with attitude scores improving, not necessarily with a score on the space.

Helpful cues

  • Your attitude is the one thing the defense can never take from you
  • Reset ritual every single time, it becomes automatic
  • Grade your attitude first, then your execution

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Introduce only one adversity per drive.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Defense is also coached to trash-talk lightly (within sportsmanship limits) to add social pressure.
