How it works

Combine a pro-agility shuttle with a live blitz read so players change direction both physically and mentally on the same play.

What you need

  • cones
  • football
  • flags

Your focus

Advanced players must process defensive pressure while executing precise footwork , this drill trains both simultaneously. The shuttle builds the explosive direction-change mechanics while the blitz read teaches players to identify and react to defensive movement before the snap. This mirrors the game demand of adjusting a route or run lane when the defense shifts.

1

Set up a standard pro-agility (5-10-5) shuttle with 3 cones 5 yards apart.

2

A coach stands behind the middle cone and signals either 'blitz left' or 'blitz right' just before the whistle.

3

Player starts the shuttle but must cut toward the side OPPOSITE the blitz signal, simulating a protection or route adjustment.

4

After completing the shuttle, player receives a pass at the exit and must immediately make a catch-and-run move.

Goal

You're doing it right when you combine the physical cut with the correct blitz read on the same rep, body and brain working together.

Helpful cues

  • Process the signal first, your feet follow your eyes
  • Stay compact in your turns, don't round the cones
  • Accelerate through the finish, not to it

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Give the blitz signal before the player sets up so they have more processing time.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Use two coaches giving conflicting signals and require the player to identify the true blitz.
