How it works
Teach young players to shuffle laterally and make a sharp directional cut on command.
What you need
- cones
- flags
Your focus
Lateral shuffling builds hip mobility and balance needed to change direction quickly in flag football. Early exposure to cutting footwork creates muscle memory for route running and evasion. Simple cone markers give visual cues that help beginners understand spacing and angles.
Set up 3 cones in a straight line, each 3 yards apart.
Player starts at the first cone in an athletic stance with knees slightly bent.
On coach's whistle, player shuffles laterally to the middle cone, plants outside foot, and cuts back to start.
Repeat 3 reps each direction, then rotate to the next player.
Goal
You've got it when you plant your foot hard and change direction in one step, not two or three steps of drifting.
Helpful cues
- Stay low, bend your knees
- Plant and push off your outside foot
- Keep your eyes up, not on the ground
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Reduce cone spacing to 2 yards and allow a slower jog pace.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a fourth cone and require two cuts before returning to start. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
