How it works
Train receivers and ball carriers to make live change-of-direction moves against a closing flag defender inside a confined space.

- flags
Your focus
Working in a defined box forces players to make quick decisions about which direction to cut under real pressure. Defenders learn to mirror and close angles while carriers learn to set up cuts with head fakes. The competitive one-on-one format closely replicates open-field flag-pull situations in games.
Mark a 10x10 yard box with cones; one ball carrier with flags, one defender starts 3 yards apart inside the box.
On the whistle, the carrier attempts to reach any boundary line without having a flag pulled.
Defender works to pull at least one flag; carrier uses cuts, jukes, and change-of-direction to evade.
Run for 8 seconds per rep; track successful flag preservations and compare across reps.
Goal
You've got it when you make the live defender miss inside the box, not just once, but consistently enough to call it a skill.
Helpful cues
- Attack one shoulder of the defender to force a commitment
- Keep your head up and read the defender's hips
- Use a stutter step before your final cut
