How it works

Execute complex positional rotations during a full-sided game where multiple players must simultaneously shift positions to maintain team shape.

What you need

  • field hockey sticks
  • field hockey ball
  • pinnies
  • goals

Your focus

Advanced team positioning requires every player to rotate when one player moves. If the left midfielder attacks, the left back covers; the central midfielder shifts. Teams that rotate without instruction are tactically sophisticated. This drill trains that collective positional intelligence.

1

Run a 6v6 or 7v7; define a set of positional rotation rules (e.g., when LM attacks, LB pushes up).

2

Coach freezes play and assesses rotation quality after each attacking sequence.

3

Each freeze earns a rotation score (0-3 for each position correctly filled).

4

Team target: 18/18 rotation score (all positions perfectly covered) within 5 minutes of play.

Goal

You're doing it right when everyone shifts positions simultaneously during the game, not one person lagging while others rotate.

Helpful cues

  • When one moves, all adjust, that's how a team works
  • Don't wait to be told; read the movement and rotate
  • Positional intelligence wins games that individual skill cannot

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Walk through the rotation without the ball first.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Opponent deliberately targets the rotation gaps with quick attacks.
