How it works
Practice defensive positioning by learning when to collapse toward the ball and when to reset to a covering position.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
- pinnies
Your focus
Defensive positioning decisions , when to press and when to hold , determine how organized a defense is. Players who understand collapse and reset move as a unit. Coordinated defensive positioning reduces gaps and makes the team much harder to score against.
Three defenders set up in defensive shape; 3 attackers work the ball.
When the ball enters the near zone, defender nearest the ball collapses to press; others adjust coverage.
When the ball is cleared, all three defenders reset to their base positions.
Coach evaluates the speed and accuracy of both the collapse and the reset.
Goal
Success is collapsing to the ball and resetting back to your covering position smoothly, your shape resets every time.
Helpful cues
- Press the ball, not the space around it
- Reset means all three, not just the presser
- Be in position before the ball gets there
