How it works
Develop coordinated high defensive line positioning and the ability to squeeze and hold when an attacker threatens.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
- pinnies
Your focus
A high defensive line compresses the field and traps attackers in offside-like positions. Coordinating when to push up and when to hold requires communication and positional intelligence. Teams that play a high line effectively win more balls in the attacking half.
Four defenders set a high line at the 25-yard mark; 4 attackers start at midfield.
When ball is passed forward, defenders hold the line and only step back when absolutely necessary.
Coach calls 'squeeze' to push defenders up and 'hold' to freeze the line.
Attackers try to get in behind; defenders work together to deny it.
Goal
You've got it when your defensive line holds high and squeezes together when the attacker drives, no one dropping early out of fear.
Helpful cues
- Hold the line flat, don't let one player drop
- Communicate the squeeze call before it happens
- High line takes courage, trust your defense
