How it works
React to the press trigger and sprint to the correct pressing position on the pitch.
What you need
- cones
- field hockey ball
Your focus
Pressing is all about reacting faster than the opposition. Drilling the sprint to a press position builds the explosive first step and correct angles that make a press effective.
Mark 4 positions: reset (center), press-left, press-right, press-forward.
Start at the reset cone.
Parent calls a direction, player sprints to that pressing cone immediately.
Return to reset. Repeat with a different call.
12 reps total. Focus on explosive first step and correct arrival angle.
Goal
You've got it when you reach the press cone and arrive in a balanced defensive stance within 2 seconds of each call.
Helpful cues
- Low first step, don't stand up before you sprint
- Arrive at the press position at an angle, never flat on
- Be ready to react on arrival, don't decelerate too early
