How it works
Teach the basic push pass technique by having players pass to a stationary partner across a short distance.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
Your focus
The push pass is the most frequently used pass in field hockey and the first passing technique beginners should master. Short-distance practice at slow speed builds the correct grip, stance, and follow-through mechanics. Early technical foundations prevent bad habits that are difficult to unlearn later.
Players stand 8 yards apart in pairs.
Coach demonstrates push pass: grip, ball placement, low backswing, follow-through toward target.
Players practice push passing back and forth; complete 20 passes each.
After 20 passes, increase distance to 12 yards.
Goal
You've got it when your push pass hits your partner's stick flat, not bouncing up, not going wide, just clean tape to stick.
Helpful cues
- Push through the ball, don't slap it
- Follow through toward your partner
- Keep your stick low before and after the pass

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
