How it works

Develop the technique and power for long hit passes used to switch play or launch counterattacks.

What you need

  • field hockey sticks
  • field hockey ball
  • cones

Your focus

Long distribution changes the point of attack and is a decisive skill in modern field hockey. Hit passes require correct posture, footwork, and timing that differ from the push pass. Players who can hit long accurately create more tactical options for their team.

1

Players line up in pairs 25 yards apart.

2

Coach demonstrates hit pass: upright grip, dominant foot forward, full swing through ball.

3

Players practice hit passes back and forth; focus on accuracy to a cone target.

4

Move pairs to 35 yards when 25-yard accuracy is consistent.

Goal

Success is your long hit pass reaching the target zone on the fly, flat trajectory, enough pace, right direction.

Helpful cues

  • Swing full, don't hold back
  • Feet set before you hit
  • Eyes down on the ball through contact
