How it works
Practice the V-run support movement, check away from the ball then arc back to receive.
What you need
- cones
- field hockey ball
Your focus
The V-run is the fundamental support movement in field hockey. Checking away first creates separation, and the arc back creates a clear receiving angle , making it much harder for defenders to intercept.
Place a cone 10 yards ahead as the "ball position". Place two cones 5 yards to each side.
Start behind the ball position. Step away from the ball (check away).
Arc back in a V toward the ball cone to receive.
Control and push back to the starting cone.
8 reps, alternate which side the V curves toward.
Goal
You've got it when both the check away and the arc feel fluid, and you arrive at the ball cone balanced and ready to receive.
Helpful cues
- The check away must be sharp, a soft step doesn't create separation
- Time your arc so you arrive as the ball arrives
- Body open on the receive, don't receive square

Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
