How it works
Develop off-ball support positioning by maintaining a passing triangle around the ball carrier at all times.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
A passing triangle ensures two options are always available to the ball carrier. Players who understand triangle support move automatically and purposefully to create angles. This builds the foundation for more complex possession and attacking structures.
Three players work together; ball carrier dribbles in a 20x20-yard grid.
Non-ball players must maintain a triangle formation, always 8-12 yards from the ball.
Ball carrier passes; the passer becomes the new moving player while triangle reshapes.
Run for 5 minutes; coach evaluates how quickly the triangle reforms after each pass.
Goal
You're there when the triangle stays in shape around the ball carrier no matter where the ball goes, all three players adjusting together.
Helpful cues
- Move before the pass, not after it
- Triangle means three, never stand in a line
- When the ball moves, the triangle moves
