How it works
Introduce off-ball movement by teaching young players to run to open spaces when a teammate has the ball.
What you need
- cones
- pinnies
- field hockey ball
Your focus
Off-ball movement is among the hardest concepts for young players to grasp because the instinct is to watch the ball. Teaching space-finding early establishes the habit before it conflicts with other learned behaviors. Shadow running makes the concept visual and immediate.
Pairs work: one player (shadow) holds the ball and dribbles; other player (mover) moves to find space.
Coach marks space zones with different-colored cones; mover must move to open zones.
After 1 minute, mover calls for ball; shadow passes.
Swap roles; discuss: which space was easiest to find?
Goal
You've got it when you're already running to open space before your teammate looks up, not waiting to be called, moving early.
Helpful cues
- Move to space, not to the ball
- Find the empty color cone
- When your teammate has the ball, your job is to move
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Color zones are large; movement is simplified.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Add a passive defender who covers one zone; mover must find the uncovered zone.No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
