How it works

Maximize collective off-ball movement intelligence through a constrained game where points are only scored for goals directly created by off-ball movement.

What you need

  • field hockey sticks
  • field hockey ball
  • pinnies
  • cones

Your focus

Rewarding only goals created by off-ball movement forces teams to focus on the thing that most often determines whether attacks succeed at elite level. The constraint creates conscious awareness of off-ball responsibilities. Players develop automatic reading of when and where to move.

1

5v5 on a 35x30-yard area; goals only count if preceded by an off-ball movement (e.g., overlapping run, dummy run, third-player run).

2

Coach confirms whether the goal qualifies; ineligible goals don't count.

3

Teams develop their off-ball movement vocabulary to meet the scoring criteria.

4

Debrief: what was the most effective off-ball movement and why?

Goal

You're doing it right when the team only scores goals from off-ball movement, not dribbling through, but moving to create.

Helpful cues

  • Your movement creates the chance, own it
  • Read the ball: where is it going, what does that open?
  • Great off-ball movement is invisible to the opponent but decisive to the score

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
