How it works
Develop a growth mindset by setting process goals (how to improve) rather than outcome goals (winning or losing) before each practice.

- field hockey ball
- cones
- small notebooks
Your focus
Process goals focus on things the athlete can control, which develops a healthy mindset toward improvement. Players who set process goals are more resilient after losses and more consistent performers. Goal-setting is a mindset skill that requires practice.
At the start of practice, each player writes one process goal (e.g., 'look up every time I receive the ball today').
Players practice normally, holding their process goal in mind.
At the end of practice, rate 1-10 how well they lived their process goal.
Discuss: what made it easy or hard to focus on the process goal?
Helpful cues
- Outcome goals are the destination; process goals are the map
- You can always control the process
- Rate your process, not the score
