How it works
Develop decision-making by choosing to turn with the ball or pass based on whether pressure is coming from behind.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
The turn-or-pass decision is fundamental to field hockey. Players who read pressure correctly maintain possession; those who don't lose the ball turning into a defender. Early practice of this read-and-react scenario builds reliable decision-making instincts.
Player receives a pass with their back to goal; partner 10 yards ahead as an outlet.
Coach stands 3 yards behind the receiver and either moves in (pressure) or steps back (space).
If pressure: player passes to the outlet partner. If space: player turns and dribbles forward.
Run 15 reps; vary pressure timing. Evaluate correct decisions, not just good execution.
Goal
You're there when you choose to turn only when there's clear space and pass when there's pressure coming, the right call, consistently.
Helpful cues
- Feel the pressure before you receive, not after
- Turn into space, pass under pressure
- Commit, half-decisions lose the ball
Adjust the challenge
Make it easier
Strip it back
Coach announces 'pressure' or 'space' aloud before the pass.UpLVL it
Add the next challenge
Pressure defender actually applies challenge if player turns incorrectly. No account needed
Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
