How it works
Combine lower-body coordination over hurdles with immediate ball control to develop full-body athletic coordination.
What you need
- field hockey stick
- field hockey ball
- mini hurdles
- cones (for variations)
Your focus
Coordinating lower body footwork with upper body stick work is a key field hockey athletic demand. Hurdles train precise foot placement and rhythm. Transitioning directly to ball control after the hurdles challenges players to adjust body position rapidly.
Set up 5 mini hurdles followed immediately by a ball placed 2 yards beyond the last hurdle.
Player runs two-feet-over each hurdle maintaining rhythm.
Immediately after the last hurdle, collect the ball and execute 5 controlled touches.
Repeat 6 times; add one hurdle per set if coordination is maintained.
Goal
Success is clearing all the hurdles cleanly and receiving the ball with control right after landing, no stumble, no miss.
Helpful cues
- Drive your knees up over every hurdle
- Sink your hips to receive the ball after the hurdles
- Upper and lower body work together, not separately
