How it works
Build resilience and composure by encouraging young players to immediately try again after any mistake in a dribbling challenge.
What you need
- field hockey stick
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
At age 6-9, the most important resilience skill is the willingness to try again without giving up. Normalizing repeated attempts removes the shame from mistakes and builds persistence. Celebrating restarts as bravery develops a growth mindset.
Set up a tricky moving with the ball course with tight gates (stick widths only).
When a player's ball goes through a gate incorrectly, they reset to that gate and try again.
Coach celebrates every restart: 'Great resilience!'
Players track how many gates they complete successfully across 5 minutes.
Helpful cues
