How it works
Develop resilience by practicing competing from a deficit in a small-sided game where teams must overcome a score disadvantage.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
- mini goals
Your focus
Resilience in field hockey is tested most when a team falls behind. Starting games at a deficit trains players to compete without panic and find a way back. Players who have experienced the feeling of a comeback in practice are calmer when it happens in games.
Set up a 3v3 on a 20x15-yard field with mini goals.
One team starts with a 2-0 lead at the whistle; other team must come back.
Play for 4 minutes; whoever leads at the end wins.
Rotate which team starts with the deficit.
Goal
You've got it when your team comes back from a deficit and scores, keeping composure through the pressure to find a way.
Helpful cues
- One goal at a time, don't chase two at once
- Stay organized even when you're behind
- Belief is the first step to a comeback
