How it works

Execute a coordinated team counter-press immediately after losing possession, triggered by a verbal cue from the nearest player.

What you need

  • field hockey sticks
  • field hockey ball
  • cones
  • pinnies
  • goals

Your focus

Counter-pressing is a high-level tactical concept that requires perfect team communication and coordination. A verbal trigger ensures all players transition simultaneously. Teams that practice organized counter-pressing win more balls in dangerous areas and limit opponent transitions.

1

Set up a 40x30-yard small-sided activity.

2

When a team loses possession, the nearest player to the ball calls 'press!' loudly.

3

All four teammates immediately collapse toward the ball in coordinated fashion to win it back.

4

Score a bonus point each time the team wins the ball within 5 seconds of the press call.

Helpful cues

  • Press call is a command, not a suggestion, commit
  • Nearest player calls, everyone else follows
  • Close the space fast, press intensity wins the ball
