How it works

Develop communication and teamwork by keeping possession in a 3v0 passing sequence with required verbal calls before every pass.

What you need

  • field hockey sticks
  • field hockey ball
  • cones

Your focus

Unopposed possession exercises let players focus entirely on technical execution and communication. Requiring verbal calls before every pass makes communication a hard rule, not an optional habit. Teamwork develops when all three players take shared ownership of the sequence.

1

Three players in a triangle 12 yards apart; one ball.

2

Pass the ball around the triangle; before every pass, the passer must call the receiver's name.

3

After 10 passes, change the triangle shape (wider, narrower, asymmetric).

4

Challenge: 20 consecutive passes without a communication error.

Helpful cues

  • Name before pass, every single time
  • Move after you pass, support the next pass
  • Teamwork means everyone communicates, not just the ball carrier

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Allow any verbal acknowledgment (yes, here) instead of names.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Add a fourth player who moves to offer an option, must call for the ball too.

Build a practice plan

Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents.

This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.

After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
