How it works
Develop self-directed coachability by having players assess their own technical execution and set improvement targets.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
- notebook or whiteboard
Your focus
Elite-level coachability includes the ability to self-coach. Athletes who can identify their own errors and correct them are less dependent on external feedback. Self-assessment also creates buy-in to the improvement process.
Players complete a moving with the ball and passing circuit 3 times.
After each run, they write down one thing they did well and one thing to improve.
In round 2 and 3, they specifically focus on the improvement point they identified.
Debrief with partner: did the self-correction work? What did you change?
Helpful cues
- Be honest with yourself, coaches can see what you can see
- Name it specifically: not 'my passing' but 'my follow-through'
- Improvement is proof of coachability

Build a practice plan
Add drills, keep the plan in this browser, then share a link with your staff or parents. This library helps you find the right drill. Inside UpLVL the right drill finds the player.
After every practice, UpLVL automatically surfaces the drills each player needs to work on most. See it for yourself.
