How it works

Develop listening and instruction-following skills by having players execute dribbling changes based on coach commands.

What you need

  • field hockey stick
  • field hockey ball
  • cones

Your focus

Coachability begins with the ability to listen and respond to instruction. Simple command-and-response drills build the habit of attending to the coach. Young athletes who practice following instructions quickly develop better coachability across all contexts.

1

Players move with the ball freely in a grid; coach calls simple commands: 'stop,' 'go,' 'change direction,' 'left,' 'right.'

2

Players must respond immediately and accurately to each command.

3

After 2 minutes, coach adds a new command; players must remember and apply all commands.

4

Finish with players teaching the commands to a partner.

Helpful cues

  • Ears open, eyes up
  • React the moment you hear the command
  • Remember what you learned, don't ask again
