How it works
Apply explosive change-of-direction skills against a live defender to score through one of four small gates.
What you need
- field hockey sticks
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
Live opposition forces genuine reactive agility rather than rehearsed patterns. Choosing which gate to attack demands rapid decision-making paired with physical agility. High-intensity reps in a competitive format drive adaptation in both speed and game intelligence.
Set up a 15x15-yard grid with a small 2-cone gate on each side.
Attacker starts in the center with ball; defender starts 2 yards away.
Attacker attempts to dribble through any gate; defender tries to dispossess.
20-second bouts; rotate attacker/defender roles after each bout.
Goal
You're doing it right when you beat the defender through the gate using a change-of-direction move they can't predict, not just outrunning them.
Helpful cues
- Use a change of pace before your direction change
- Protect the ball with your body
- Commit the defender before cutting
