How it works
Improve lateral change of direction and acceleration while maintaining ball control through a T-shaped cone course.
What you need
- field hockey stick
- field hockey ball
- cones
Your focus
The T-drill pattern replicates the multi-directional demands of field hockey. Performing it with a ball adds a skill component that mirrors real game demands. Timed attempts motivate players to improve speed alongside technical control.
Set up a T-shape with cones: one cone at the base, one 10 yards ahead, and one each 5 yards left and right of the top cone.
Player starts at the base cone, dribbles forward to the top cone.
Dribble laterally to the left cone, then across to the right cone, then back to the center.
Dribble back to the start; time each attempt.
Goal
You're there when you complete the T-course and the ball stays within stick reach through every direction change.
Helpful cues
- Stay low in your athletic stance
- Push the ball ahead only as far as your next step
- Explode out of each direction change
