How it works
Combine lateral agility footwork in a box pattern with a shooting finish to simulate game transitions.
What you need
- field hockey stick
- field hockey ball
- cones
- goal or target
Your focus
Coupling agility movement with a finishing skill reflects the real-game sequence of beating a defender before shooting. The box pattern develops lateral speed and quick directional pivots. Adding a finish under fatigue improves composure and accuracy.
Mark a 5x5-yard box with 4 cones; place a ball and target/goal 3 yards outside one edge.
Player shuffles around the outside of the box (lateral-forward-lateral-back).
On the coach's signal, player sprints to the ball and takes a shot on target.
Reset and repeat from different starting sides of the box.
Goal
Success is finishing the box pattern with a clean strike on goal, footwork sharp, ball controlled, shot on target.
Helpful cues
- Short, quick feet in the box
- Square your hips to the target before striking
- Transfer weight through the ball on the shot
