How it works

Develop the core and lower-body strength to finish layups and drives through defender contact at full speed.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • resistance bands or partner pressure

Your focus

Finishing through contact requires strength, not just skill. Players who develop the core stability and lower-body power to maintain balance through a hit consistently convert at a higher rate than those who lose their base on contact. Training finishes under resistance builds both the physical strength and the mental confidence to attack contact.

1

Player attacks the basket from the wing at full speed. Partner applies resistance with a resistance band around the player's waist, pulling backward.

2

Player must maintain forward momentum, absorb the resistance, and complete the finish.

3

Increase resistance across sets: 50% resistance, 75%, 90%.

4

Remove resistance and run unresisted, note the difference in drive explosiveness.

Goal

It's clicking when contact through the lane doesn't change the outcome, you absorbed it, stayed balanced, and finished. Strength made the difference.

Helpful cues

  • Drive through the resistance, your core is your engine
  • Low pad, high attack, don't stand up into the resistance
  • Resistance makes unresisted driving feel easy, that's the point

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Use partner hand pressure on the shoulder instead of resistance band.

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge

Two resistance bands, one on the waist, one on the shooting arm.
