Your focus
Spacing violations are rarely penalized in practice, so players never truly internalize the habit. Making spacing violations costly , losing possession , creates immediate negative feedback that accelerates learning. Programs that run this drill for 3–4 weeks typically see dramatic offensive improvement because spacing becomes automatic.
Run full-court 5v5 scrimmage. Coach has a whistle. Any time two offensive players are within 12 feet of each other (except screen scenarios), coach blows whistle.
Offensive team loses possession immediately on any spacing violation.
Coach calls specific violations: 'Clog in the corner!' or 'Wing too close to the ball!'
Track spacing violations per possession. Goal: below 1 per 5 possessions.
Goal
It's clicking when your team avoids spacing violations for the entire possession, no penalty means everyone is where they should be, all at the same time.
Helpful cues
- Twelve feet apart, use the space the floor gives you
- Spacing is not a suggestion, it's the only way this offense works
