How it works

Maintain elite-level focus in a high-intensity scrimmage with multiple simultaneous cognitive demands.

What you need

  • basketball
  • hoop
  • full court

Your focus

Elite basketball requires players to focus on multiple things simultaneously , their assignment, the ball, the score, the clock, and their own positioning. Players who can process multiple focus demands without dropping one develop the basketball IQ that coaches prize at the highest levels. This drill is the most cognitively demanding in the entire training program.

1

Run small-sided activity full space scrimmage with the following simultaneous requirements: call every screen, track personal score and team score, call defensive assignments, and identify the team's best shooter each possession.

2

Coach randomly quizzes players mid-drill: 'What's the score? Who's the best shooter right now? What did you call last?'

3

Incorrect answers cost the team 1 point.

4

Play 10 minutes. Debrief which cognitive demands were easiest and hardest to track simultaneously.

Helpful cues

  • Your brain has to play just as hard as your body
  • Great players process what average players miss, train your processing
  • Focus is never passive, it's an active choice on every play

Adjust the challenge

Make it easier

Strip it back

Reduce to 2 simultaneous demands (score + defensive calls).

UpLVL it

Add the next challenge
